Facsimile Edition by Franco Cosimo Panini The Historia Plantarum, created in the 14th century under the patronage of Gian Galeazzo Visconti in Milan, is a landmark medical and natural history codex. Heavily influenced by the teachings of Ibn Butlan, it explores the effects of plants, animals, and minerals on human health. The manuscript features 590 exquisitely detailed illustrations, including plants, animals, and minerals, each entry adorned with lavish gold-decorated initials and intricate embellishments. Originally presented by the Duke of Milan to Wenceslaus IV to strengthen political ties, the codex holds remarkable historical and scientific significance. It is part of a broader tradition inspired by Ibn Butlan s 11th-century Taqwim es-sihha, which also led to the creation of the Latin Tacuinum Sanitatis series, now preserved in Vienna, Rome, London, and Paris. The Historia Plantarum comprises 590 pages measuring 19 × 15 inches, showcasing over 500 plant illustrations and 80 animal depictions, offering an exhaustive study of medieval natural sciences and medicinal knowledge.
