My grandmother’s name was Guerrina Cossetto, and my grandfather, Angelo, bore the surname Kocijančič, later Italianized to Cociani. I am proud to carry that surname from another land. When they were born, Istria was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire; it later passed to Italy, then became part of Yugoslavia, and is now in Croatia. After World War II, many Istrians left the country, including my grandparents, who settled in Italy. Other relatives, including my great-grandparents, stayed: they were farmers and deeply loved their land. I feel a profound connection to those places. I hold distant childhood memories of visiting my grandparents during long summer stays in their little house in Istria. Above all, I cherish the stories of my grandmother, my father, and my aunt—a memory closely intertwined with historical events. I felt the need to explore the reason for this deep love I have for Istria, to question the past in order to better understand my present. So, as an adult, I decided to return to this land so dear to my ancestors: in 2014 with my father, and nine years later with my own family. They were two different journeys, but both very intense. The first was rooted in the past, guided by my father’s memories and by encounters with distant relatives. The second, instead, was connected to the present and marked by the desire to pass on to my daughters the strength of these roots. I will always carry with me the image of my father in the dim light of my grandparents’ kitchen, with those blue eyes. A clear and deep gaze, like the Istrian sea.
