Original antique black-and-white encyclopedic plate titled “Chinesische Kultur I.” The composition presents eleven numbered views relating to late nineteenth-century Chinese culture: women’s dress, a bamboo palanquin, the ceremonial clothing of a viceroy and a mandarin, a traditional Chinese junk, an arched bridge, the Great Wall at Nan-Kan-Paß, the Tien-Ning-Szu pagoda near Beijing, part of Beijing’s fortifications and an old gatehouse in Shanghai. Published for the article “China” in Meyers Konversations-Lexikon, 5th Edition, by the Bibliographisches Institut in Leipzig, 1894. The finely engraved imagery offers historical, ethnographic, architectural and decorative interest. Visible condition shows age-related toning and scattered spotting, with a rough, worn left binding edge and minor edge wear. The principal printed area remains complete and clearly legible.
