The album was released in the UK on May 26, 1978,[2] and in the US in June 1978, on Harvest and Columbia, respectively. In an interview with Circus in 1978, Gilmour stated: "This album [David Gilmour] was important for me in terms of my self-esteem. At first, I didn't think my name was big enough to compete with it. Being in a group for that long can be a bit claustrophobic, and I needed to get out of Pink Floyd's shadow."
